My best email subject lines from 2025 (and what they have in common)
Sep 23, 2026
A number worth knowing
The industry average email open rate across all niches sits at around 20%.
A well-optimised list with strong subject lines should be hitting 30-40%.
Important caveat: Apple's Mail Privacy Protection has been obscuring open rates since 2024, so these numbers need context. That said, the principle holds - your subject line is the single highest-leverage element of your entire email.
The thing most people get wrong
You can write the most valuable, well-crafted email in the world.
If the subject line doesn't earn the open, nobody reads it.
Most subject lines fail because they describe the content rather than create curiosity about it.
'This month's marketing tips' describes the content.
'The humble tomato' creates a gap the reader needs to close.
None of them describe the email content. All of them are unexpected enough to earn a click from someone scrolling through 20 unread emails.
The formula behind them
- Create FOMO - hint at something the reader might be missing
- Shock or pattern-interrupt - say something unexpected
- Ask a question so specific the reader feels personally addressed
What's the best subject line you've ever written and what was the open rate? Drop it in the comments.
