A question worth sitting with
At what point do we actually become adults?
An 18-year-old in Australia is legally old enough to drink. But the brain continues developing until at least 25.
I'm in my mid-40s and my children are wiser than me in more ways than I'd like to admit.
So here's the question I keep coming back to.
Why do we as business owners keep handing over our authority to others, hoping they'll have the answer we can't find for ourselves?
My honest conclusion after hundreds of conversations
I believe everyone you see around you is a toddler who bravely zipped up their adult suit this morning and is working it out as they go.
The confident ones. The ones with the polished LinkedIn profiles. The ones posting their wins every second day.
All figuring it out in real time. Just like you.
What the research actually says
Brian Tracy spent decades studying successful people across hundreds of interviews and speaking engagements reaching over five million people worldwide.
His conclusion on intuition?
"Your intuition is one of the best guides that you possibly have. Each person has inside them an intuitive sense which will always give you the exact right answer for you."
He went further - noting that the people who struggled most were those who overrode their gut feeling in favour of what seemed fastest or easiest in the moment.
The ones who moved forward with confidence were the ones who did the research...and then trusted themselves.
What this means for how you make decisions
Do the research. Learn from people who've been where you want to go. Seek out expertise where it genuinely helps.
But at some point, you have to come back to yourself.
Your instinct about your own business, your own customers, your own situation - it is far more informed than you're giving it credit for.
The more you practice listening to it, testing it, and trusting it - the less dependent you become on someone else having the answer.
The thing nobody tells you about running a business
Everyone is figuring it out as they go.
The ones who move fastest aren't the ones who have it figured out. They're the ones who stopped waiting until they did.
You already know more than you think you do.
Stop waiting for the adult in the room.
